History and Information
Originally the Tahoka Cemetery was under the control of the Tahoka Cemetery Association. In the late1970's the Cemetery Association found increasing financial demands deemed it necessary to turn the Tahoka Cemetery over to the City of Tahoka.
City of Tahoka has worked to update the older records for the Tahoka Cemetery. As is with many old cemeteries, the sale and documentation of the plots and records were handled by volunteers with good intentions of keeping records accurate, however, some of our records for the oldest part of the Tahoka Cemetery are sparse. The headstone information has been checked against the records we have, but those without headstones often have incomplete information. We welcome additional information from family and friends.
How did this occur? Some families that lived in the early era of Tahoka may have lived here but a short time and moved on; many had good intentions of eventually placing a headstone. Families may have found it financially impossible to purchase a headstone for their loved ones. Funeral home name plates are of tin and do not withstand weather. Some have placed a wooden crosses or a piece of rock with a hand-etched name that time and weather has also worn away. We also recognized many individuals lost loved ones, buried them and didn't feel the need to return often to the burial site. Who would have guessed that the populatity of geneological research would have loomed in the future and ancestors grave sites would have been so energetically sought out, photographed and shared?
Please feel free to email us or write us with any corrections. We prefer to have the new information written and signed by the person requesting a correction so we may attach the request document to our files. We welcome any further knowledge and information.
